Summer 2017

I wasn't kidding when I said all we did this summer was relax by the pool and we enjoyed every minute of it. Henry and I both decided we were staying home this summer and relaxing and that is exactly what we did. We did have two close trips to The Grand and a weekend at Orange Beach. It was a great Summer for The Johnstons!

And that was our Summer in a nutshell! I hope you guys had a great Summer as well. I am not sure if I will be blogging as often as I used to, but I do know that I have been wanting to post so I am just going to take it day by day and post when I feel like it. I also really love to be able to look back and see what we were up to on here.

Thanks for reading!

What I Read This Summer

New Reading Nook in our Back Bedroom

Hi Strangers! I love a great book recommendation and this Summer all I have done every weekend is live by our pool and read. It has been so relaxing to reconnect with one of my favorite pastimes. I will say that I am always reading, but this Summer I have managed to crush my reading list. Trips to the library during the week and devouring the books on the weekend. It has been a wonderful break and I am sad to see the Summer end. I am however very excited for Fall! I love posts like this so I can add to my list - please let me know if you have any recommendations!

Great book to read at the beach or the pool. One of my favorite Summer reads is Savannah Breeze by MK Andrews recommended by one of my dear friends and this one does not disappoint. It is about three best friends who share a beach house for the Summer and all about the different dramas going on in their lives. Quick and easy one.

Gripping and I could not put it down. This one was on Reese Witherspoons list and you know I read everything that she recommends. Falk returns to his hometown for his best friends funeral after twenty years and is drawn back into the mysterious reasons he left long ago and why they might involve his friend who died.

Girlboss - Sophia Amoruso

I was totally sucked into the series on Netflix so I knew I had to read the book. I liked some of the points but didn't really enjoy her writing and just didn't really like her as much as I thought I would. Wouldn't recommend this one.

The Woman in Cabin 10 - Ruth Ware

I loved Ruth Ware's other book In A Dark Dark Wood so I knew I wanted to read this one. It was a bit harder to get into at first but once I got to the plot I enjoyed it. Lo Blacklock is a travel writer and believes she witnesses a woman being thrown overboard. It definitely had me looking over my shoulder - great thriller.

The Singles Game - Lauren Weisburger

I love Lauren Weisbugers writing, hello The Devil Wears Prada! I knew I wanted to read this cute book. It was a great beach book about a tennis star in the limelight and everything that comes with it. Would recommend.

Truly Madly Guilty - Liane Moriarty

Again another author I love. This one is about a group of friends and a dinner party. A lot can happen in one night. You get to see in from all points of view. Would recommend!

The Glittering Court - Richelle Mead

Teen Fiction and I loved it! Dystopian book about a select group of girls who are given the chance to become rich, wealthy, and a new class in a brave new world. One girl Adelaide who is already wealthy in the current world but wants to start a new life on her own. She doesn't expect to find love along the way. If you like a good dystopian book you will enjoy this fun read.

Nantucket Sisters - Nancy Thayer

Nancy Thayer is probably the reason I want to visit Nantucket so badly - she truly makes it sound so appealing. This is a great book about friendship from youth to adulthood and two girls from two different parts of Nantucket and how their lives intertwine and their friendship grows and changes. Loved it - great beach read!

Heres to Us - Elin Hildebrand

The three wives of Deacon Thorpe the famous chef who has recently passed away. All stuck at the family beachhouse and grieving his recent death. None have really ever been in the same room together. I really enjoyed this one and how it all played it.

All Is Not Forgotten - Wendy Walker

Super creepy and dark. A girl is raped in an affluent town in Connecticut and she is given a new drug that will help her forget. She struggles with losing the memory and begins to see a therapist - the story is told through his point of view. What's really happening in this small town. Never saw this one coming - dark and scary for sure.

The Perfume Collector - Kathleen Tessaro

Probably one of my favorites that I read. Set in 1950s London and in the 20s in New York, Paris, and MonteCarlo. It weaves the stories of two different women and how their lives are connected. Beautifully written and I could not put it down. Highly recommend!

All The Missing Girls - Megan Miranda

Out of all the thrillers - this one and Since She Went Away were my two favorites. Page turner! Nic Farrell returns home to the town she left 10 years ago when her best friend Corinne disappeared. Another girl goes missing and it opens up old wounds and she begins to wonder what really happened to Corinne. READ IT.

Since She Went Away - David Bell

Read this in one sitting. Jenna Barton's best friend Celia disappeared three months earlier and Jenna has been blaming herself every single day. When her son's new girlfriends disappears - things are suddenly happening really quickly and we begin to learn more about the story.

The Girl Before

Finishing this one tonight. Two women living in a house in London during different times and the mysterious architect who has tons of rules for how you live in the house.

Clearly I have had a thing for thrillers! My top recommendations would have to be The Perfume Collector, Since She Went Away, and All The Missing Girls. I have several new ones that I have just started and will definitely be bringing some more book reviews soon.

March Mood Board

Happy Sunday Friends! I am currently sipping my coffee, enjoying finally having curtains in my living room, and watching the Harry Potter marathon. I could not think of a better way to spend Sunday morning. Today I wanted to share all the things inspiring me for the month of March. Since I am in the midst of decorating our first home I have been a little absent from the blog but hopefully I will be popping in soon with a house update - trust me we are not even near finished.

Happy March Friends!

January Favorites + A Few House Updates

January was pretty dreary if I am being honest. I always start it with such grandiose plans and by the end I am just so ready to start February. We haven't really had much going on and I have had the hardest time pushing myself to start a new healthy routine. I finally got back into it last week and although I am sore all over - I have more energy than I had all month. Henry and I are so excited to kick off the Mardi Gras season this weekend and I think we are both looking forward to having some fun upcoming events on the calendar. Although my January was dreary, I did find some great new favorites.

Laura Mercier Body Creme - I am OBSESSED with every single one of these scents and I have been using them sparingly to make them last. My Aunt gave me a pack of the miniatures for Christmas and the creme is so rich and the smells are amazing. I think I have decided on getting the large Creme Brûlée one but I want them all.

Loreal Elnett Hairspray Strong Hold - I have never really cared that much about hairspray - looking back probably because I have never used one that actually worked. This stuff actually makes my hair stay most of the day.

Pureology Pure Volume Instant Levitation Mist - This one was a recommendation from my hair stylist - oh yeah by the way I chopped my hair again. I spray it on my hair wet and I see a noticeable difference to the volume of my hair.

Maybelline Brow Drama in Soft Brown - This one is so good for easy brows during the week. I just literally swipe it on and go. Great when you are in a hurry and not looking for a super dramatic brow.

Josie Maran Argan Oil - This one is an old favorite I am revisiting. I was reading an interview Mandy Moore did (because I am obsessed with This Is Us + her skin is amazing) and she says she uses it every single night. I was missing it in my skincare routine so I purchased the 50 mL bottle. My skin feels amazing and I literally use it all over my face before bed.

Sally Hansen All Fired Up - This one was inspired by Stassi's current nail color in the last few episodes of Vanderpump. This is the most perfect Orange/Red and I think it is a great pop of color for February/March. Also can we just talk about how great the formula is for these polishes.

Forever 21 Hooded Parka - I bought this jacket as a test run. I really want to get a Barbour jacket this year and thought it would be a great idea to get something somewhat similar ( for a lot less $$) and see how often I wear it. I have worn this adorable jacket almost daily. It is the perfect amount of jacket for the weather in Mobile. I am 100% sold on purchasing a Barbour Beadnell now.

UGG Dakota Slipper - Henry gave me these as a Christmas gift and I have worn them every single day. It is like walking on clouds and I will never buy any other house shoe/slipper again. UGG's are hands down the most comfortable shoes on the planet. I really want these short booties next.

A Little Peak at the Kitchen - We are hoping to paint the cabinets soon/change all hardware. We will also be changing out the granite and backsplash.

A Corner in our Living Room - found this watercolor at Goodwill for $5 and feel like it was a major win. I may reframe it down the line.

Constantly working on styling these shelves.

What Did I Read this Month: In A Dark Dark Wood - highly recommend this book and this author. I couldn't put it down-super easy and creepy read. I just started The Woman in Cabin 10 by the same author.

What Am I Watching: Vanderpump, Summer House - honestly can't get enough of those two, just finished The Crown, This is Us, New Girl, Ladies Of London, and HGTV

Most Recent Purchase: This top for Spring that I can't wait to wear.

On My Radar: I think I want a pair of the mom jeans that everyone is sporting - anyone else?

Happy Tuesday Everyone and thank you so much for reading!

Winter Reading List

Happy Monday Everyone! I hope you are enjoying a nice long weekend. Our's consisted of date night out and a viewing of Bridget Jones Baby, which I really loved. We worked on the house - which I am finding is a constant work in progress. I want to do photos, but there are so many things we need before I feel like we are ready for that yet. Hopefully I will be able to do a home update soon.

One of my 2017 goals is to read consistently again. I definitely get sucked into my tv shows and there are so many good books that I want to read. I have rounded up my current winter reading list. I would love to get through all of these before March - that is my goal. I plan on reading at night and not scrolling through my phone or watching You-Tube which has become a nightly routine. The first book on my list is In a Dark Dark Wood which I started last night. I will do updates on all of them and let you know what I liked and didn't like.

Left to Right - 1/2/3/4/5/

Thank you for reading!

MY NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

Well..... we are 10 days in and I am already behind on my resolutions..... not good guys not good at all. I have been looking everywhere for my drive to blog again and haven't quite found it yet, I am almost positive it is hiding behind my work-out clothing and tennis shoes that I have been threatening to pull out for 10 days now. I know - we put so much pressure on ourselves ( or at least I do ) to change things drastically right after the indulgent holidays and it is a little hard. I really did put pen to paper in my adorable Kate Spade notebook with all my goals on the first, now to write them here visible to the world and where I can hopefully hold myself accountable.

(1.) Budget and Save - I know that this one is a common theme but I really want to learn to budget regularly and put money away and pay off all debt. I love the Dave Ramsey method and will probably be using this again. I would love to know your tips for saving and for budgeting. This is a huge goal for our family in 2017.

(2.) Get Fit as a Family/Cook  More Often - Henry and I really want to shape up this year. We both want to lose a few pounds and get into a much more frequent work-out routine. This winter has really put us into hibernation mode. One of the big goals for this and for the budget is meal planning. I try so hard at this and then get utterly stumped when I go into the grocery store - even with a list and find myself distractedly wondering around the frozen food aisle - anyone else? It just becomes really daunting sometimes for me. We did really well this week but I want to get a food routine going.

(3.) BLOG - Work on my content and grow - I want to really base my content this year on what I am interested in focusing on and less about what all the bloggers I follow are doing. I really want to hone in on my favorite topics and make unique content for this spot. I want to make it something I am really really proud of and that you find interesting to read.

(4.) Furnish and Photograph our Home - By the end of 2017 I would really like to furnish our home and photograph it room by room for the blog. I know it is not going to be exactly where I want it but I definitely want to be able to look back and see my progress.

(5.) Purchase Thoughtfully - Before I buy anything I want to make sure it is something that I really want/need. I want to save the money to buy the things I really want and not spend lots on small little things that I will end up throwing out at the end of the year.

(6.) Go Somewhere We Have Never Been - Take a trip somewhere new with Henry and have an adventure together.

(7.) Don't Sweat The Small Stuff - Don't allow myself to think the worst or freak out over something that hasn't even happened yet and probably will not happen over small little things that I will forget about the next day. This one is something that I deal with on the daily and I know it is mostly all in my head.

What are your resolutions?

Thanks for reading!
